DA appeals Hernandez's voided conviction

BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts prosecutors on Friday appealed a court ruling that erased former NFL star Aaron Hernandez's murder conviction in the 2013 killing of a semi-professional football player.

Hernandez's conviction in the fatal shooting of Odin Lloyd was voided after the former New England Patriots player killed himself in prison. Under a long-held Massachusetts legal principle, courts typically erase the convictions of defendants who die before their direct appeals can be heard.

Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III filed an appeal with a single justice of the Supreme Judicial Court on Friday. He called the rule "archaic" and said it "does not serve the public interest."

Raiders QB Carr signs for 5 years, $125M

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Derek Carr and general manager Reggie McKenzie never doubted the two sides could reach a long-term contract agreement to keep the quarterback with the Raiders before Carr's self-imposed training camp deadline.

Carr was open about how much he wanted to spend his entire career with the organization and after a decade searching for a franchise quarterback the Raiders weren't about to let a player they drafted and developed leave just as he was becoming a star.

Chiefs extend coach Reid, GM Dorsey out

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Andy Reid and John Dorsey arrived with the Kansas City Chiefs within weeks of each other, the coach and general manager given the massive undertaking of turning around a 2-14 franchise.

Reid will head into Year 5 by himself.

BOSTON (AP) The New England Patriots have signed former New York Jets linebacker David Harris.

The team announced the move Thursday. The Patriots also released receiver DeAndrew White.

Saints sign 1st-round pick Ramczyk

METAIRIE, La. (AP) New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the club has signed the second of its two first-round draft choices, offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

Loomis says the 6-foot-6, 314-pound Ramczyk, who was drafted 32nd overall out of Wisconsin, has signed a four-year contract. Ramczyk's signing means all seven of New Orleans' draft choices are under contract in advance of training camp.

Packers DL Guion arrested for DUI

HONOLULU (AP) Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion has been charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant in Hawaii.

Honolulu police booking records show Guion was arrested early Wednesday in Waikiki. He was released after posting $500 bail.

NEW YORK (AP) New England Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell can be sweet when he wants to be.

Mitchell has a three-book deal with Scholastic, the children's publisher told The Associated Press on Thursday. The books include a newly illustrated edition of his self-published "The Magician's Hat," to come out next May, and two more original works.

Former Rams OL, actor Loneker dead at 46

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Keith Loneker, the former Kansas offensive lineman who spent three years in the NFL before becoming a modestly successful actor, died Thursday. He was 46.

The school announced Loneker's death in a statement. No cause was given, though son and current Kansas linebacker Keith Loneker Jr. said he'd been diagnosed with cancer late last year.

Brady gets sumo lesson in Japan

TOKYO (AP) New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady got a quick lesson in the ancient sport of sumo during a visit to Japan.

Brady, who visited China and Japan this week on a tour promoting football, stopped in at the Sakaigawa sumo stable in Tokyo on Thursday and stepped into the ring with sumo wrestler Goeido.
